History

Province V, as we know it today, was created in 1989 when Province VI requested to be merged with Province V. At that time, Province VI consisted of Pi, Chi, Beta Upsilon, and Beta Psi, while Province V consisted of Xi, Upsilon, Beta Lambda, Beta Phi, Gamma Iota, Gamma Delta, Gamma Chi, and Mu Omicron Pi. Delta Nu at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy later joined Province V after their founding in 1994.

The composition of Province V and VI had remained largely unchanged from 1956 to 1989. Province VI was established during the reorganization that occurred effective 1956. The only significant change to either Province during that 33-year span happened in 1972 when Upsilon and Kentucky Graduate transferred from Province VII to Province V, at their request.

From 1946 to 1956, the chapters of the modern Province V were organized under Province IV. Many of the Provinces at that time saw the addition or activation of chapters, following the growth of the fraternity post-World War II. During this period, the following chapters were activated (or re-activated) within Province IV:
      Beta Phi, March 1947
      Xi, March 1949
      Gamma Iota, November 1950
      Gamma Chi, May 1952
      Along with Graduate Chapters Chicago (1949), Akron (1950), Buffalo (1953), Kentucky (1953)

Prior to 1946, the chapters that were organized into Province IV in 1946 were divided among Provinces V, VI, and IX, under the Province organization system established in 1938, which included 15 different Provinces. Prior to 1938, the modern Province V chapters were organized under the "Middle West Province", one of the original Provinces created in 1918.
